My seven year old surprised me with a question before he went to school this morning. “Are there more children than grownups in this world?”
I thought for a minute or two and told him I wasn’t sure, that maybe he could ask his teacher.
After a few moments he said, “I think so, because grownups make babies, and they might have more than one.”

Questions children ask
Posted in Family, Personal, Thoughts on March 30, 2009 by maryrestainoMystery of phantom killer solved
Posted in news, Thoughts on March 29, 2009 by maryrestainoI read an interesting article in the New York Post this past Friday about a phantom female serial killer who apparently killed, mugged and burgled across Germany, France and Austria for 15 years, leaving her DNA at 40 crime scenes. Detectives had been on trail on the phantom since 2001. 1
At one point, a $400,000 bounty was placed on the head of the elusive and unusual criminal.
Last April, forensic science experts in Stuttgart began analyzing hundreds of unused cotton swabs in response to fears that the DNA came from a source of contamination rather than an actual perpetrator.
“On March 26, German police revealed that the cotton swabs they use may have all been contaminated by the same worker at a factory in Austria — and that the Phantom of Heilbronn never existed.” 2
Science is a wonderful tool, but it should only be a complement in investigative work. Science is carried out by scientists who are, after all, human.

So long ago

Your letters I’ve thrown away
Your small gifts lost
Like our love that wasted away and died
So long ago
You were afraid to give
Reluctant to navigate the rough sea of life
We didn’t struggle to keep our boat afloat
So long ago
The details of what transpired
Have faded like the evening sun
We both could have tried harder
So long ago
Finish your projects
Posted in photography, Photos, Poetry, Thoughts on March 27, 2009 by maryrestainoFinish your projects
Don’t let your dreams die
Has this happened to you?
Posted in Poetry, Thoughts, writing on March 27, 2009 by maryrestainoWhen you left me
I didn’t see it coming
With a scream, I broke the silence
“Why?”
Only to hear the echo of
My voice bounce back
With the passage of time
I’ve finally realized
I’m just too good for you
Don’t feed the vine
Posted in photography, Photos, Poetry, Thoughts, writing on March 25, 2009 by maryrestainoThe pain of you leaving
Has winded through me like a stubborn vine
Wrapping around my heart
Tightening its grip
Refusing to let go
Was it that you left me?
Or am I just clinging to the pain
So I can give up on myself?
My tears and resentment feed the vine
Allowing it to live and grow stronger
I can let you go
I will learn to let you go
The vine will wither and die
And my heart will beat fully once more
To love and be loved again
It wasn’t about me

As imperfect beings
Living in an imperfect world
We let each other down
Sometimes we meet
Only to come together for a short time
On our journey through this life
You played your part in my life, changing me
Then moved on to someone new
To play a part in their life
Our Creator meant it to be this way
Or it would not be so
The Divine plan
Is wider and grander
Than my own
Wildlife coexists with busy highway

Life is forever changing

Is ever changing
Today
This moment
Is everything
It won’t be the same as tomorrow
Or yesterday
