Ten ways to make housework easier

Housework tips

Here are some simple tips to ease the burden of keeping your home clean.

1.       Get rid of unnecessary items. Items collect dust and need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Ask yourself if an item you are keeping is worth devoting a chunk of your life to cleaning. If not, throw out, donate or sell the item at a garage sale.

2.       Thoughtfully select multi-purpose cleaning supplies, you don’t need a bottle of cleaner for every job. Then, you won’t have a lot of cleaning supply bottles lying around. Try adding a ¾ cup Pine sol to a gallon of water and fill your spray bottles. No rinsing is usually required and costs much less than spray cleaners you can purchase. Also, keeping a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water solution in a spray bottle is a cheap and effective cleaner.

3.       When cleaning, focus on one area or room at a time before going on to the next. Set your kitchen timer for 30 minutes, adjust for more difficult tasks. When the timer goes off, move on to something else.

4.       Do a small amount each day; quickly clean up debris from your last meal and quickly mop before heading off to work.

5.       Develop a schedule: maybe Monday is laundry day, Tuesday you scrub the kitchen floor, etc.

6.       Enlist the help of other members of the household. Stress to children that toys go back where they belong after they’ve been played with. Ask family members to clean up after themselves after a meal or an accident.

7.       A tip for cleaning silk flowers: 1 cup of salt into a paper bag. Add flowers one by one and shake.

8.       For cleaning carpets: Use baking soda and add enough water to make a paste. Apply to the stained area and leave it for one hour. Remove excess and vacuum the rest.

9.       Make your own natural air freshener: Add about 10 drops of an essential oil into a spray bottle filled with water, shake and you’re ready to go.

10.   Turn on your favorite music before you start cleaning. It helps!

A note about making your own cleaning solutions: make sure you clearly mark the bottles and keep them, and all cleaners, away from children.
